"Without music", someone once said, "life is a journey through a desert". Since our founder -while an apprentice in Vienna- helped built instruments for Ludwig van Beethoven and other famous artists during the years 1813-1819 six generations of the Sauter family have sought to continue this legacy. We hope as you read over the information contained on this homepage that you will see not only the beauty and perfection of a Sauter piano but also be able to hear the joy and music that can be created with it. Piano music is an explosive expression of humanity. It connects everyone, no matter where we are from. After all, helping create that connection is why we build pianos.

Nestled in the south downtown area of Waukegan, Illinois, Family Piano Co. is one of the newest Authorized Sauter Merchants*. Family Piano Co. is one of the most elegant piano stores in the United States. Opening their doors in November of 2006, Family Piano is celebrating 17 months of growing prosperity, doing wll enough to expand their new business with the adition of an exciting multi- purpose room aptly named “Joplin’s Java & Ragtime Cafe” which opened November of 2007. Now that all the construction dust has settled, Family Piano Co. is poised to offer their customers and friends a musical experience unlike any other retail piano store.

The two owners, Alice Alviani and Mark MacLeod, are piano technicians by trade, with a combined experience of almost 40 years servicing pianos. Alice has been a self employed piano technician for the last 13 years, also selling refurbished starter pianos out of her home. Mark has been a piano rebuilder and service manager of two major piano stores in the mid-west- and has been an all around piano technician for his entire adult life. The two have very different backgrounds in the piano industry, but share the same passion and vision when it comes to pianos. “We sell nice pianos to nice people.” says Alice. “We totally support our customer, and look forward to long term relationships with them.”

Mark’s focus is on piano service: “We approach the piano from the inside out. Our thorough knowledge of the instrument allows us to be very honest with our clientele.”, says MacLeod. “I have learned a lot over the years about both the piano itself, and about retailing. What you see when you walk into our showroom is a warm inviting space that is elegant and comfortable.”

Alice adds,”To top off the showroom is our panoramic view of the Waukegan River. It looks like a state park here in the summertime. The leaves on the trees are so full you can’t see anything beyond the beautiful ravine!”

Family Piano Co. became an Authorized Sauter Dealer* in 2007. “It was a given when I met Alice and Mark. The enthusiasm and dedication to their profession just mesmerized me. For the Illinois market we knew that we needed people who would go the third and fourth mile in their service and be a cut above any regular piano merchant” says Basilios Strmec, National Sales Director for Sauter Pianos.”However, I was not prepared for what I experienced when I visited the store- the combination of highest quality instruments, a workshop area, and an adjacent coffee shop with regular live music was unlike anything else I had seen!”

Alice and Mark had played a Sauter during National Conference of the Piano Technicians Guild in 2007. “The Sauter Piano in the hallway of the Piano Technicians Convention was so gorgeous to play, it almost made me cry….then to be asked to become an Authorized Sauter Dealer took my be surprise”, says Mark. “After a  career of working with pianos, I can honestly say that we’re representing the finest piano in the world.”

R. Kassman- Purveyor of Fine Pianos and Authorized Representative for the Bay Area
April 2nd, 2008 by Sauter Europe

Russell Kassman is truly a leader in the musical community in the San Francisco Bay Area. Throughout his 30 years as a purveyor of fine pianos he has been an official sponsor, supporter and friend to august organizations including the San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Symphony, San Francisco Ballet, Napa Symphony Orchestra, Jon Simms Center for the Arts and others. Incidentally, he is also a fine piano technician who has had ample experience with concert artists and trained as a pianist himself, holding a degree in performance. He has long been linked to the finest names in the piano world and has been crucial in introducing Sauter Pianos and other German manufacturers to the U.S. market.

R. Kassman

For decades, Russell’s San Francisco showroom, behind the Opera House in San Francisco’s performing arts district, was the centerpiece of the City’s keyboard scene. And it has been about that long that Mr. Kassman has been associated with Carl Sauter Piano Company -  a relationship that is not just business but a personal friendship to the Sauter Family. Indeed, Russell takes the time annually to visit with the most prestigious piano manufacturers in Europe and handselect instruments to his visual and acoustical liking- before making them available to the general public.

Russell Kassman & Bill Kunz

A special event and the opportunity to visit R. Kassman will be on Saturday, April 26th. Valley Baptist Church in San Francisco recently secured two Sauter grand pianos for their premises and invited Sauter artist Andrae Crouch for a dedicatory appearance. Mr. Ulrich Sauter, owner of Sauter Piano Company, decided to join the event. As Mr. Ulrich Sauter is the President of the Guild of German Piano Builders (BDK) and a member of the Board of the German Association of Piano Manufacturers, he in turn was invited to address four Bay-Area wide chapters of the Piano Technicians Guild (PTG). The presentation will start on the 16th of April at 10 am at the premises of R. Kassman and will include a slide show on the preparation of the soundboard in the Sauter Factory. The presentation is geared to piano technicians, however, the interested public is invited to join. If you are an enthusiast of fine pianos and would like to meet and chat with the owner of the world’s oldest - and one of the most prestigious - piano manufacturing companies we kindly invite you to join us between 12 and 2 pm at the store.
